The Project looks at ways in which schools can contribute to the health of pupils, teachers and the wider community through the development of a health promoting school environment.
Welsh Public Health Officers were invited to Zanzibar to talk about the Welsh Healthy Schools model after Zanzibar teachers became intrigued during a link school visit. After establishing a Steering Committee with various Stakeholders in the district, 10 schools were chosen to be part of the Pilot project and have been designated a Healthy Schools Coordinator. The schools have been assisted to identify their own needs, based on national aims and local criteria. Health is taught through the formal curriculum; Considerations of health permeate the hidden curriculum or school ethos; Links are developed between home, school and the surrounding community, and the current focus has been hygiene and exercise and activity.
