In April 2016 Sazani Associates received the go ahead to begin a four-year project funded by Comic Relief entitled ‘ABC for Quality Teaching and Learning in Zanzibar’.
Comic Relief’s ‘All in, All Learning’ initiative sought ways to help improve education for teachers and pupils and it will be funding Sazani Associates, to tackle issues of in service teacher training in Zanzibar.
Sazani will be working with lower secondary teachers in Pemba and Unguja to cascade a lesson study approach through continuing joint professional development over four years within 51 secondary schools across the islands. The aim is to improve student results and the ability of students to progress educationally through improving the quality of teaching and learning. The project will focus on three core skill areas, numeracy, literacy and critical thinking.
Sazani will train and mentor teachers as Cascade Teachers to train and support teachers in their respective schools to deliver the ‘ABC for Quality Teaching & Learning ’project; that aims to improve teachers’ and students’ Attitudes towards education, develop and improve their Behaviour for learning; and increase core and key Competences, through lesson study. This project will utilise the Healthy and Sustainable Schools (HSS) curriculum so basic and key skills in literacy, numeracy, problem solving are delivered through lessons, in English, linked to local livelihoods and realities.
The project’s theory of change is that through supporting teacher’s ability to support learning in the classroom through participatory teaching methods which support critical thinking, student results and their ability to progress through secondary education will improve.
During the ABC project Form 1 and Form 2 teachers will be supported to use cross curricular teaching materials in their classrooms to deliver content to increase the understanding and awareness of global sustainability issues. The materials can be used within the Lesson Study cycle and linked to areas of the current syllabus. Previous curriculum mapping workshops have provided links to show how and when these resources link to the HSSP.
Lesson study is a powerful, professional learning approach that has been seen to greatly improve learning and teaching and the practice and subject knowledge of teachers. It has 140 years of history in Japanese schools and is increasingly used globally because of the dramatic improvements in pupil achievement it brings. It involves teachers focusing on small groups of learners, identifying what is working for them and what the teachers are doing to make an impact in the classroom. Teachers then work collaboratively to coach one another to improve their classroom practice.
